Addicted to eating? My Childhood Events and Story of Food Addiction
TW: this episode talks about feeling addicted to food, substance use, and alcoholism.
Have you felt addicted to eating?
Have you ever asked yourself if you were addicted to food? I have asked myself that question for many years. I come from a family of alcoholics, met and fell in love with an alcoholic, who later took his life.
Food has been a coping mechanism all my life
I always have felt an addictive nature to food. It never really dawned on me, until I hit my 40’s, that my relationship to food was so very complex, like the nature of addiction.
I blamed my lack of consistency, caring and willpower for my food habits and my body.
We place so many rules and blame upon ourselves, when these patterns form unconsciously, and many times at a young age. If you tuned in to Episode 3, My Kitchen Cupboard Story, you’ve heard how I used food to cope with tough stuff.
Here, I talk a little bit more of the layered concept of Food Addiction.
A very big topic, this is by no means meant for medical advice, it is my own story and experience.
For those who may need Eating Disorder Resources, scroll down. I also start to explore this topic on my blog, and in Episode 6, with Registered Dietician and brilliant researcher David Wiss, founder of Nutrition in Recovery in Los Angeles.
ALL of this is my experience, and not meant for medical advice. remember, we are all different, and have different life experiences that shape how we think, behave, and yes, EAT.
I am always here for conversation, in the comments. If this episode resonated with you, please, share, screenshot, post on social media, so that we can help ALL OUR WOMEN FRIENDS let diet culture go in midlife and start celebrating what out bodies have accomplished.
